Project Overview
In modern oilfield operations, mechanical lifting equipment accounts for a massive portion of overall site energy consumption. An oilfield operator approached Dico Energy to address the high operational costs, power grid instability, and frequent mechanical failures associated with their traditional fixed-speed pumping units.
The Challenge
The existing infrastructure relied on conventional across-the-line starters, resulting in massive inrush currents during motor startups that severely stressed the local microgrid. Furthermore, the fixed-speed operation could not dynamically adapt to changing wellbore fluid levels. This led to incomplete pump fills, severe “fluid pound” phenomena, excessive mechanical wear on the rod strings, and substantial reactive power losses. The client urgently needed a system to optimize energy usage while protecting downstream mechanical assets.
Our Solution
To resolve these inefficiencies, Dico Energy deployed our advanced power control and variable frequency drive (VFD) solutions explicitly engineered for harsh oilfield applications. Our system integrates intelligent load-sensing algorithms that continuously monitor the motor’s torque and operational speed. By automatically adjusting the pumping frequency in real-time to match the well’s inflow performance, the system ensures optimal and continuous fluid production without unnecessary mechanical stress.
Results & Impact
The implementation of Dico Energy’s intelligent electrical systems yielded immediate and measurable benefits for the operator:
Maximized Equipment Efficiency: The soft-start capabilities eliminated electrical spikes, significantly reducing mechanical wear on the gearbox and extending the overall lifecycle of the pumping equipment.
Significant Energy Reduction: By eliminating reactive power waste and matching motor output to actual well conditions, the solution drastically reduced energy consumption, effectively lowering the lifting cost per barrel.
Optimized Operations: Automated pump-off control minimized manual interventions and downtime, helping operators optimize daily production workflows with unprecedented reliability.
