Project Overview
As global oil and gas exploration pushes into deeper reservoirs, High-Pressure, High-Temperature (HPHT) environments present formidable challenges to wellbore integrity. A drilling contractor undertaking a complex deep-well project required an advanced cementing system capable of withstanding extreme bottom-hole static temperatures and severe pressure differentials without compromising critical zonal isolation.
The Challenge
In HPHT conditions, conventional cement slurries face multiple catastrophic failure risks. Extreme temperatures dramatically accelerate the hydration process, causing premature thickening and significantly reducing the safe pumpability window. Additionally, extreme bottom-hole conditions can lead to severe fluid loss into permeable formations, resulting in slurry dehydration, dangerous gas migration, and long-term compressive strength retrogression. A highly specialized, resilient cement additive package was mandatory to prevent casing collapse and cross-flow.
Our Solution
To combat these extreme downhole conditions, Dico Energy engineered a suite of customized cement additives tailored specifically for this high-temperature well cementing operation. Our technical team developed a specialized slurry design incorporating our proprietary high-temperature fluid loss control agents and advanced synthetic retarders. This customized formulation was extensively lab-tested to ensure it perfectly matched the exact geothermal gradients and pressure profiles of the target HPHT well.
Results & Impact
The customized cementing solution was successfully pumped and displaced with zero operational downtime. The field application delivered critical engineering advantages:
Reliable Fluid Loss Control: The customized additives formed an impermeable filter cake, providing exceptionally reliable fluid loss control. This successfully prevented fluid invasion into the formation and maintained the vital design density of the slurry.
Extended Thickening Time: The advanced retarder package delivered a predictable and extended thickening time, allowing operators ample operational margin for secure placement in the deep HPHT environment.
Long-Term Integrity: The optimized formulation ensured excellent cement-to-casing bonding and robust zonal isolation, securing the wellbore’s structural integrity for its entire productive lifecycle.
